Iron Deficiency & Anaemia
Low iron levels (iron deficiency) are common and can cause symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath.
There are different ways to manage iron deficiency, depending on the cause, severity and your individual health needs. Your GP can assess your symptoms, medical history and blood test results and discuss the treatment options that may be appropriate for you.
What Causes Iron Deficiency?
Iron deficiency can have several possible causes, including:
- Not getting enough iron in your diet
- Blood loss
- Increased iron requirements, including during pregnancy
- Problems absorbing iron
- Certain medical conditions
When Should I See a GP?
If you are experiencing ongoing tiredness, weakness, dizziness or shortness of breath, speak with a GP. Your GP may recommend blood tests to check your iron levels and investigate possible causes.
If your results show iron deficiency or anaemia, your GP will discuss appropriate treatment options with you.
What is the Cost?
An out-of-pocket fee of $150 may apply for the procedure where this has been recommended by your GP.
Please speak with the clinic about current fees and eligibility.
Where Do I Start?
Please book an appointment with a GP to discuss your symptoms or concerns about low iron levels. Your GP can assess your individual circumstances, arrange any necessary testing and discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you.
