Iron Infusions

Low iron levels (iron deficiency) can cause fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or shortness of breath. In some cases, iron tablets taken orally may not work. That’s where iron infusions can help.

What is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion is where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a vein (intravenously). This allows your body to absorb and use the iron better than iron tablets.

What is the cost?
Your out of pocket cost will be around $107.

Who Can Benefit?
Iron infusions are typically used when:
• Iron tablets have caused side effects or have not worked
• Iron levels need to be increased quickly
• There is ongoing blood loss or malabsorption
• You have certain medical conditions such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease or inflammatory bowel disease

Is it Safe?
Mild side effects can include headache, nausea, or temporary changes in taste. Serious allergic reactions are rare but will be closely monitored for during the infusion. Your doctor will explain the potential risks and benefits in detail during an initial consultation, and will answer any questions you have.

What to Expect
Our health team will provide your iron infusions in a safe and comfortable clinical setting. The process involves:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your doctor will discuss if an iron infusion is right for you. This includes discussing blood test results or organising blood tests.
  2. The Infusion: On the day of the infusion, the doctor will insert a needle into a vein on your arm. Iron will then be given through that vein over 30 to 60 minutes by our nursing staff.
  3. Aftercare: You will be monitored for a short period after the infusion to ensure there are no adverse reactions. You can then go about your normal day.

Where do I start?
Please book in with one of our doctors to talk about whether an iron infusion is right for you.
